The Winds of Style

Exploring Windrush Generation’s Contribution to Fashion

Fashion is a powerful tool for self-expression, cultural identity & social change.

Throughout history, various communities have left an indelible mark on the fashion landscape, shaping trends, and influencing the way we dress.  One such group is the Windrush Generation. The Caribbean people whose migration to the United Kingdom in the mid-20th century was embodied by the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush on 22 June 1948. The migration brought forth a vibrant and influential cultural movement.

The Source delves into the invaluable contributions of the Windrush Generation to the world of fashion, celebrating their style, creativity, and enduring legacy.

The Windrush Generation’s arrival in Britain infused the country with a burst of colour, energy, and new perspectives. Their distinct style and individuality soon found its way into British street fashion. Challenging the prevailing norms and introducing a fresh wave of creativity from sharp tailoring to vibrant prints. The Windrush Generation’s sartorial choices influenced the evolving British fashion scene, leaving an indelible mark that continues to resonate today.

Embracing Caribbean Heritage

Fashion became a powerful medium through which the Windrush Generation celebrated their Caribbean heritage and expressed their cultural identity. Vibrant colours, tropical prints, and traditional Caribbean textiles became prominent features in their wardrobes. Fabrics like madras and batik were paired with British designs, creating a unique fusion of styles that reflected their multicultural background. This blending of cultures not only revitalized the British fashion landscape but also paved the way for the acceptance and appreciation of diverse aesthetics.

Despite facing numerous challenges and systemic discrimination, the Windrush Generation harnessed their unique experiences and heritage to create a fashion movement that challenged norms, broke barriers, and propelled British fashion onto the global stage.

Tailoring and Dapper Style

The Windrush Generation played a significant role in popularizing sharp tailoring and dapper style in Britain. Many Caribbean men who migrated to the UK during that time were known for their impeccable suits. Their style capturing the essence of sophistication and elegance. Their attention to detail, from well-fitted jackets to polished shoes, became a hallmark of their fashion sensibility. This emphasis on refined tailoring and attention to grooming had a profound impact on British menswear, influencing subsequent generations and establishing a lasting legacy.

Moreover, the Windrush Generation’s impact on street style cannot be overstated. Their vibrant ensembles, accessorized with intricate jewelry and headwraps, transformed the streets of Britain into vibrant runways. They turned everyday life into an exhibition of self-expression, inspiring countless individuals to embrace fashion as a form of personal art.

Empowering Women’s Fashion

The Windrush Generation not only made an impact on men’s fashion but also empowered women to embrace their own unique sense of style. Caribbean women brought with them a rich tapestry of fashion traditions and influences. From the flamboyant elegance of the African head wrap to the vibrancy of traditional Caribbean dresses, women from the Windrush Generation celebrated their individuality through fashion. Their boldness and self-assuredness paved the way for diverse representation and inclusivity within the fashion industry.

Their fashion choices became vehicles for self-expression and empowerment, especially for women. By embracing their unique styles, they defied societal expectations and challenged traditional gender roles. Through their clothing, they asserted their independence, strength, and individuality, paving the way for future generations to do the same.

Music, Dance, and Fashion Fusion

The Windrush Generation’s cultural contributions extended beyond fashion alone. Music and dance played an integral part in their lives, and their passion for these art forms influenced their fashion choices. The emergence of ska, reggae, and calypso music not only created a new sound but also a distinct style associated with these genres. Sharp suits, pork pie hats, and Cuban-heeled boots became synonymous with the music scenes, resulting in a fusion of fashion, music, and dance that captivated the imagination of the British youth.

The Windrush Generation’s migration to the United Kingdom in the mid-20th century brought forth an explosion of creativity and cultural exchange that left an indelible mark on the world of fashion. Their vibrant style, fusion of cultures, and celebration of individuality have had a lasting impact on British fashion. From their influence on street style to the empowerment of women’s fashion, the Windrush Generation’s contributions continue to inspire designers, influence trends, and shape the diverse landscape of fashion today.

Perspectives on the influence of Windrush Generations on style and fashion is well depicted in Rianna Norbert-David’s article the Psychology Windrush Style and her collaboration with Lucie Whitmore Black & British: A Fashionable Windrush Story, both worthy reads.

The Windrush Generation’s contributions continue to reverberate throughout the fashion industry today. Their legacy reminds us of the importance of inclusivity, cultural appreciation, and celebrating diversity. Designers from all backgrounds draw inspiration from their rich tapestry of styles, paying homage to their heritage and recognizing the influence they have had on contemporary fashion.

In this way, the Windrush Generation’s migration to the United Kingdom left an indelible mark on the world of fashion, transforming it into a dynamic, multicultural, and inclusive space. Their enduring legacy serves as a powerful reminder that fashion can be a catalyst for change, a medium for storytelling, and a force for unity in an increasingly interconnected world.

Tech, Style & Love

So I’m in love, it’s platonic but OMG, so exciting!

But first a request, let’s get phygital, and bridge the gap between the physical store and the digital experience.

March 2023

Tech

Augmented Reality (AR) is a sensational space which high street stores, luxury designers and beauty companies alike are dipping their toes into the techy warm waters of the phenomenal potential of the digital world.

Retailers and designers such as Zara, H&M, Warby Parker and Gucci have teamed up with technology companies like Wanna, PICTOFiT, etc., and are offering shoppers the ability to virtually try on (VTO) garments in-store or sneakers and glasses in the comfort of their home, office, train or chill spot (via their apps).

Seeing how glasses fit your face or sneakers complement an outfit means you can select your shades while streaming the latest movie, enjoying your favourite sports event or taking a breather from you know who.

The potential is immense and promoting the benefits of AR in the fashion world is 100% on our B2B and B2C trajectory. The convenience, environmental advantages, and simple joy of shopping is like simply wow!  The Source is exploring technology to benefit it clients so watch this space.

Style

Luxury designer Jonathan Simkhai’s collaborated with Everyrealm and Blueberry Entertainment to showcase his 2022 collection. It is a stunning visual of a superb union of technology, luxury fashion and beauty in another plane – Metaverse (watch it here).

As AR and MR (mixed reality) experience develop the applicability of digital technology to the fashion industry for general use by everyone, or at least anyone who wears clothes and has internet connection, will provide shoppers with an exciting immersive experience.

Jonathan Simkhai’s 2022 Second Life metaverse fashion show is beautiful and his 2023 designs are even more fabulous as they hug, drape, and artfully accentuate the feminine form.

Love

The soft, powerful and bold craftsmanship reflect womanhood with pieces that can add edge to the working wardrobe or playful “strong like bamboo” graceful dresses. Deconstructed jackets, and skirts are in cool tones that are super versatile. You can mix and match colourful or muted crop sweaters, wraps or tees. You can throw on a jacket or wrap and make it business casual then whip them off for stylish playtime. His soft, playful structured collection purrs luxury which is clearly in Simkhai’s DNA.

Simkhai, Spring/Summer 2023

Simkhai’s penchant for style, creativity and is exemplified in his planned marriage proposal to TJ Allers which went array, but skilfully rescued by close friends who sound amazing. Simkhai and Allers wedding started with cocktails, followed by after ceremony sushi topped off with a food truck. all rounded with champagne, music and some dancing at their gorgeous home. (Smikhai & Allers wedding) Style, love, vision and agility- what’s not to love!

So my friends let’s get phygital, phygital let me hear ya body talk
(Thanks Olivia Newton-John – RIP 🙏🏽💟)

Oscar 2023 Favourites

The 2023 Oscars was attended by the great and good of the movie industry. “Everything Everywhere All At Once” was the runaway success, followed “All Quiet on the Western Front”, with poor old “The Banshees of Inisherin” with 9 nominations, but no podium time.

Worse still was Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “The Woman King, starring Viola Davis not making the nominations list at all.

The ceremony was full of glitz and glamour, as we expect and love. Some actors and guests played safe with easy styles classic looks, some wearing bespoke costumes and others nicely nodding to the five R’s  of sustainability to refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose and recycle. There was sequins, shimmer, silk and satin aplenty from all genders. Some good and others that would have been better left behind on the sketchpad.

There were inventive hairstyles with updo’s and braids, forward ponytails and gestures to yesteryear with finger waves and pin curls. Danai Gurira’s hairstyle was the standout (or stand-up) eye-catching style, with a magnificent towering bubble updo by hairstylist Larry Sims.

Of the stunning array of costumes we have (with some difficulty) selected a few favourites.

Before that, acknowledgement of a stylish dress, conveying a fierce message at a comparatively superficial event is in a category of its own. Christian Siriano’s white dress with black silk taffeta overskirt adored by Oscar nominated actress Shohreh Aghdashloo was fabulous.

Scribed on the overskirt was the names of three Iranian women who died protesting in the September 2022 protests (Mahsa Amini, 22; Hajar Abbasi, 70; and Nika Shakarami, 16) on the left. On the right, the slogan which should be the mantra of Women’s International month (and every month) – Women, Life, Freedom.

Congratulations to Aghdashloo and Siriano for seizing the moment, erasing the line between style, beauty and human rights.

So onto our favourites:-

The Source’s award winner is this irresistible dress from the astonishing artist Lady Gaga. Lady G wore a Versace gown from their 2023 fall ready-to-wear collection. The black gown with a sheer  corset, plunging back and low rise (very low) skirt was sophisticated with risqué elegance. Tiffany & Co provided her platinum and diamond jewellery from their archived “Victoria” collection.

Danai Gurira was regal in Jason Wu’s black gown with Messika diamonds to complement her towering updo, paying homage to her African heritage.

Angela Bassett wore a custom-made violet organza Moschino gown with an extravagant bow neckline and sweeping fluted hem.  Accessorized with a statement Bulgari diamond serpentine necklace and a celestial disco ball evening bag by Judith Leiber.

Cara Delevingne wore a striking Elie Saab rose red gown, catching shoulder bow with thigh high split and satin platform shoes in the same hue as the resplendent gown. Bulgari provided an exquisite three-strand diamond emerald eye snake necklace.

Halle Bailey showed she is beautiful as a mermaid or fairy. She wore a whimsical aquamarine Dolce and Gabbana tulle floor length gown, which was light and airy. De Beers provided some extra sparkle with a “Midnight Aura” necklace.

We also love her after-party dress (see below).

Harry Shum Jr’s was magnificent in a kimono style white and navy tuxedo. With a navy silk sash and asymmetric piping it was an inspired look and a gorgeous union of east and west styling by Adeam.

Michael B Jordan looked handsome in Louis Vuitton black tuxedo, with Tiffany diamond and pink sapphire and green tourmaline brooches “Birds on a Rock”, designed by Jean Schulmberger, for added elegance.

After the excitement of the awards, the thrill of the Vanity Fair’s after party meant a costume change, naturally.

We particularly liked…

Rooney Mara, added a red and off-white Napoleonic style jacket to her vintage empire style Alexander McQueen Oscar dress.  The jacket elevate the dress pictured on the “red” carpet earlier.

The Oscars never fails to excite, inspire and entertain. So until next year, stay stylish!
